Heifer International Kenya through KLMP seeks to leverage digital technology, and blended financing, mobilize strategic partnership investments in the poultry and livestock sector and policy dialogues geared towards creating an enabling business environment at the County and National government level. The project also provides the opportunity to expand into the beef value chain in the Arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) and deepen Heifer’s interventions in the Lake Basin Economic Block (LBEB), targeting value chains with the highest impact among the smallholder farmers, youth, and women.

Kirinyaga County is one of the 47 counties in Kenya which borders three counties namely Nyeri, Murang’a and Embu. It covers an area of 1,478.1 square kilometres and lies between 1,158 and 5,380 metres above sea level in the South and at the Peak of Mt. Kenya respectively. It is endowed with a forest cover of 350.7 Km2. Kirinyaga is translated as the dwelling place of God in the Kikuyu language. Kirinyaga County is situated at the foot of Mt. The Kenyan dairy industry is among the top in Africa and is the leading in East Africa. The industry is on an upward trajectory with an estimated growth rate of 3% - 4 % per year.
The dairy value chain is an important socioeconomic enterprise contributing 4.5 %, 14% and 44% to the national, agriculture and livestock sub-sectors GDP respectively. The sector provides livelihood to an estimated 1.8 million smallholder households, employing an estimated 750,000 persons directly and 500,000 indirectly.
Currently, the total milk production in the sector is estimated to be 4.6 Billion litres per year.

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is a new agency tasked with regulating the manufacture, importation, exportation, registration, distribution, prescription and dispensing of veterinary medicines and other animal health products in Kenya.
VMD was established under CAP 366 (article 39) of the laws of Kenya.
